Organized Sessions for
IEEE SoSE 2008:
Session Title:
Design in a System-of-Systems Engineering Context: Methodology and Applications
Co-Organizers (name, contact info):
- Dan DeLaurentis, School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Purdue U., West Lafayette, Indiana, USA (ddelaure@purdue.edu)
- Harrison Kim, Dept. of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering, U. of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois, USA (hmkim@uiuc.edu)
Background/Expertise/Interest of Organizers:
- System-of-Systems design methodology
- Large-scale system optimization
- Transportation system design
- Product portfolio and product family design
- Concurrent, parallel coordination for System-of-Systems design decision making
Purpose of Special Session
The purpose and focus of the session would be to collect and organize contributions that advance understanding of system-of-systems design and optimization methodologies. We will invite papers in the area of modeling SoS, integration of SoS design and operations, SoS optimization methodologies, as well as recent applications including air transportation, product portfolio optimization, data intensive product design, etc. If we are successful in attracting enough papers, it may be that two sessions, one focusing on methods and the other on applications, need to be formed. Alternately, our session will focus on methodological aspects while papers that strongly emphasize application will be directed to other sessions as appropriate.
Target Audience:
IEEE conference attendees who are professionally involved in planning for and/or the design of large-scale complex systems and who must compete on the basis of advanced systems engineering capabilities (e.g. system of systems approach). Academics who are interested in discerning patterns that characterize the structure and nature of system-of-systems problems.
List of potential Reviewers:
For those target authors who cannot contribute papers, a request will be made that they serve as reviewers. For example, the following may be invited authors or reviewers: Charles Dickerson, Longborough University, Andres Sousa-Poza from Old Dominion University, and Mike DiMario from Lockheed Martin Corp.
